[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] Daegu downtown 'Dongseong-ro' has been selected as a 'Test Bed' for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's AI-based pedestrian accident prediction and risk factor improvement technology development project.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety shortlisted 11 regions nationwide as candidates for the technology development project to develop pedestrian safety technologies and conduct living lab demonstrations, then held a local government contest. Dongseong-ro in Daegu and Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province were finalized as test beds for the technology development project.

Starting in November, Daegu City, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and research institutions such as the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology will deploy special equipment equipped with LiDAR sensors in Dongseong-ro to investigate and collect pedestrian conditions.

The collected big data will be analyzed through video interpretation to identify risk factors, followed by demonstrations of improvement technologies for each risk factor. After the demonstration, national funding will be provided to improve pedestrian risk factors.

Yoon Jeong-hee, Director of the Daegu City Transportation Bureau, stated, "With this project, Dongseong-ro is expected to establish itself as a nationwide standard model in the field of pedestrian safety using 4th industrial technologies," adding, "We will strive to drastically improve the pedestrian environment around Dongseong-ro and revitalize the Dongseong-ro commercial district, which has been stagnant due to COVID-19."
