[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Lee Jae-yong, Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics, who is on a business trip to Vietnam, is carrying out an intensive on-site management tour over four days, inspecting local operations including Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display.

According to Samsung Electronics on the 22nd, Vice Chairman Lee, who departed for Vietnam on the 19th, visited Vietnam until this day, inspecting the construction site of the Vietnam Research and Development (R&D) Center being built in Hanoi city, as well as Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display production plants. Accompanying him on this trip were Han Jong-hee, President of Samsung Electronics Visual Display Business Division; Roh Tae-moon, President of the Wireless Business Division; Lee Jae-seung, Vice President of the Home Appliance Business Division; and Lee Dong-hoon, President of Samsung Display.

On the 20th and 21st, Vice Chairman Lee visited the Samsung complex in Bac Ninh Province and Thai Nguyen Province near Hanoi to receive business status reports and inspect mobile phone and display production plants. Additionally, on the 20th, he held a meeting with Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Prime Minister of Vietnam, and personally inspected the construction site of the new Vietnam R&D Center. Samsung Electronics began construction of the largest Southeast Asian Vietnam R&D Center in Hanoi in March this year (16 floors above ground, 3 floors underground, total floor area approximately 80,000㎡) and plans to complete it by the end of 2022. About 3,000 R&D personnel related to software and hardware for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets will work there.

Following this, Vice Chairman Lee visited Samsung Electronics’ TV and home appliance production plants in Ho Chi Minh City and discussed mid- to long-term business strategies. He said, "Let us develop the capability to respond agilely to any major changes in the post-COVID era. We must find opportunities amid crises. Let us watch out so that no neighbors fall behind. Let us put in a little more effort and move forward together into the future."

Samsung is also conducting talent development and corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities in Vietnam, including ▲industry-academia cooperation with major universities ▲support for training of national representatives for the WorldSkills Competition ▲consulting to improve corporate productivity ▲training manufacturing consultants and mold experts ▲operating Samsung Hope Schools as after-school programs.

Meanwhile, Vice Chairman Lee also visited Vietnam in October 2018 to inspect Samsung’s business there. Prior to that, in October 2012, he visited the Bac Ninh plant in Vietnam with Lee Kun-hee, Chairman of Samsung Electronics, to inspect the mobile phone production site and encourage employees.
