Government: "20,000 Won Communication Fee Support, Text Notification by Tomorrow... Does Not Include Small Payments"

[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The government announced that SMS messages are being sent from the 25th to the 29th to eligible recipients regarding the 20,000 KRW communication fee support.

According to the Ministry of Science and ICT on the 28th, the Communication Fee Support website (www.통신비지원.kr) will also be fully operational starting this week. This site provides integrated one-stop information related to communication fee support and will promptly announce any additional updates.

Below are the main Q&As related to the 20,000 KRW communication fee payment.

- Who is eligible?

▲ Citizens aged 16 to 34 (born between January 1, 1985, and December 31, 2004) and those aged 65 or older (born on or before December 31, 1955) are eligible. Eligibility can also be easily checked by entering the date of birth on the above website.

- What are the eligibility requirements?

▲ As of September, the person must have one mobile phone line registered under their name. Personal ownership includes budget phones and prepaid phones.

- How is the support provided?

▲ There is no separate application process. 20,000 KRW will be automatically deducted from the bill for one mobile phone line per person. If multiple mobile phones are in use, the fee for the phone line that was activated first among the currently used lines will be eligible.

- What if the monthly fee is less than 20,000 KRW?

▲ The principle is to maximize the 20,000 KRW discount by carrying over to the next month or other methods.

- When will the support be applied?

▲ In principle, it will be reflected in the October bill (for September usage). However, for those who activated their line between September 16 and 30 or who change the registered name as described below, the deduction will be applied to the November bill (for October usage).

- I am using a line registered under another family member’s name. How can I change the registration?

▲ In principle, support is provided after changing the registration to the user’s own name. During the registration change period (September 28 to October 15), either the transferor or transferee can visit a nearby agency with an ID and simple supporting documents (family relation certificate, health insurance card, resident registration, basic certificate, etc.) to change the registration to the actual user’s name. Previously, both the transferor and transferee had to visit together, or if only one visited, a consent form and seal certificate from the other party were required.

- Can I receive support for small payments made via mobile phone?

▲ The support is primarily for mobile communication fees. Small payments made through mobile phone authentication for purchasing goods or content are distinguished from communication fees and are not supported.

- Can I receive support for device installment payments?

▲ Device installment payments are not considered mobile communication fees and are therefore not supported.
