President Moon, Democratic Party, and People Power Party Approval Ratings All Decline [Realmeter]

[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] A public opinion poll revealed that the approval ratings of President Moon Jae-in and the Democratic Party of Korea both declined simultaneously. The People Power Party also remained in the 20% range, continuing a downward trend for two consecutive weeks.

According to Realmeter, which conducted the poll commissioned by tbs from the 21st to the 23rd, the positive evaluation of President Moon's administration dropped by 2.2 percentage points from the previous week's aggregate to 44.2%, announced on the 24th. Negative evaluations rose by 1.6 percentage points to 51.7%.

By age group, the largest declines were seen among those aged 70 and above (33.5%, down 8.3 percentage points) and those in their 60s (35.8%, down 5.2 percentage points). Regionally, support decreased in Daegu·Gyeongbuk (down 8.4 percentage points) and Gwangju·Jeolla (down 4.0 percentage points), but increased in Busan·Ulsan·Gyeongnam (up 3.1 percentage points).

The controversy over the military leave of the president’s son, the attitude of Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae regarding the issue, and the reduction in the scope of the 20,000 won telecommunications fee support are believed to have influenced the approval ratings.

Regarding party support, the Democratic Party of Korea fell by 0.6 percentage points to 34.6%. The People Power Party also dropped by 1.1 percentage points to 28.2%, remaining in the 20% range for two consecutive weeks. Other parties ranked as follows: the People’s Party at 6.4%, the Open Democratic Party at 5.9%, and the Justice Party at 5.3%. The proportion of undecided voters was 15.1%.

This survey contacted 30,695 voters aged 18 and over nationwide, with a final response of 1,507 people, resulting in a 4.9% response rate. The sampling error is ±2.5 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. For more details, refer to the Central Election Survey Deliberation Commission website.
