Chonnam National University-Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation Launch 3D 'Dinosaur Commemorative Medal'

Korean Dinosaur Species Model 'Koreanosaurus Boseongensis'

Chonnam National University-Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation Launch 3D 'Dinosaur Commemorative Medal'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] A dinosaur excavated by Chonnam National University has been reborn as a three-dimensional commemorative medal through advanced coin manufacturing technology.

The Dinosaur Research Center at Chonnam National University (Director Professor Heo Min, Department of Earth Environment Sciences) announced on the 21st that, together with the Korea Minting, Security Printing & ID Card Operating Corporation, they have unveiled a commemorative medal modeled after the dinosaur officially named in Korea, "Koreanosaurus boseongensis," and have started domestic and international sales.

This medal is the first innovative product that uses advanced coin manufacturing techniques to create a three-dimensional golden dinosaur egg and combines it with the traditional medal form. The egg can be opened to provide an experience akin to excavating dinosaur eggs and bone fossils.

Additionally, the inside of the dinosaur egg is designed with high realism to depict the excavated dinosaur bone fossils.

The front of the medal delicately and antique-style expresses the restored appearance of "Koreanosaurus boseongensis," while the back features a silhouette image of the dinosaur and its scientific name.

The commemorative medal made of silver (external medal weight 370g, diameter 70mm; internal dinosaur egg weight 38g, size 30×40mm) is limited to 999 pieces, priced at 1,188,000 KRW each.

The bronze medal (weight 26g, diameter 40mm) will have an initial sale of 2,000 pieces. The price is 49,500 KRW each.

Pre-orders will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until the 8th of next month through the Korea Minting Corporation's online shopping mall and other channels.

The medal packaging is designed with motifs of dinosaur footprints and eggs discovered on the Korean Peninsula.

For the bronze medal, it is made in the form of an educational booklet providing various dinosaur-related information. Additionally, the card-type certificate of authenticity incorporates anti-counterfeiting technology.

This medal has attracted attention both domestically and internationally, being featured in the September issue of the newsletter published by the World Mints Directors Conference (MDC), an international forum of minting authorities.

This commemorative medal is the first work in the "Korean Peninsula Dinosaur Series," themed on the first Cretaceous dinosaur discovered on the Korean Peninsula. The Chonnam National University Dinosaur Center and the Korea Minting Corporation plan to release a series of commemorative medals featuring carefully selected native Korean dinosaurs discovered on the peninsula: the second series "Haenamichunus uhahngriensis" and the third series "Koreaceratops hwaseongensis."

Meanwhile, the Chonnam National University Dinosaur Research Center is a hub for dinosaur research on the Korean Peninsula. Professor Heo Min discovered a complete dinosaur bone fossil at the dinosaur egg fossil site in Boseong County, Jeollanam-do, and in 2011 published a paper in a renowned German geological journal, introducing "Koreanosaurus boseongensis," the dinosaur officially named after Korea, to the international stage.
