[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] LS Cable announced on the 21st that it has started mass production of aluminum wires for electric vehicles.

LS Cable explained that it has expanded its investment, anticipating that aluminum will become a key material in vehicles due to the lightweight competition in the electric vehicle industry.

Aluminum conductor wires are over 40% lighter than conventional copper wires, reducing the total weight of wires per vehicle from about 25 kg to approximately 15 kg.

LS Cable's factory has established the only dedicated aluminum wire production line in Korea. When copper and aluminum wire production facilities are used together, copper particles can corrode aluminum.

The company stated that major automotive electronics companies in Japan and other countries are also establishing dedicated aluminum lines, and the proportion of aluminum wires is expected to increase from the current approximately 5% or less to over 30% by 2025.

An LS Cable official said, “Through LS ALSCO, a specialized subsidiary for the aluminum business, we can procure high-strength aluminum and produce everything from materials to finished wires in an integrated process,” adding, “We are about to sign supply contracts with global wiring harness companies and are considering additional investments.”
