KCC Paint Ad: Kian84 Transforms into Bob Ross, Showcasing His Unique Charm and Evoking Laughter
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] KCC's paint commercial "Kian84's Paint Classroom," released on the 23rd of last month, has surpassed 3.6 million views on YouTube in just over two weeks, gaining popularity among netizens.
The commercial seems poised to surpass the popularity of last year's ad "Why Are You There, Hyung?" featuring the "Too Much Talker" Park Chan-ho, which had become a hot topic. In response, KCC has launched a comment event to engage with customers and show appreciation for their support.
The commercial stars webtoon artist Kian84 (real name Kim Hee-min), who has recently gained popularity for his unique behavior on variety shows. The 2-minute 25-second video features Kian84 transformed into "Uncle of Memories," Bob Ross.
Bob Ross, who gained great popularity from the past EBS program "Let's Draw," is famous for his brown afro and beard as his trademarks. Kian84 imitates this look exactly, eliciting laughter with his awkward charm and sly facial expressions, which resonated well with netizens.
As "Uncle Bob," Kian84 emphasizes that interior decorating with paint is simple and easy. His roller and brush strokes in the video are confident and unrestricted. He paints over outdated wallpaper, moldings, doors, wooden tables, kitchen base cabinets, metal chairs, dog houses, and concrete exterior walls without discrimination.
He even goes as far as painting the advertiser’s face with eco-friendly paint. Then, with his cheeky expression and voice, he repeatedly exclaims, "It's so easy, right?" imprinting the message that "painting is easy."
The response from netizens who watched the commercial has been explosive. The video has received nearly 900 comments and over 4,000 likes.
Comments include: "I usually skip ads immediately, but I watched this one till the end because it was so funny, and I came back to watch it again," "The advertiser is amazing. The ad is strangely fascinating and fun, and it really suits Kian84," "Is the paint on the advertiser’s face real? I burst out laughing while watching," and "Kian84’s acting somehow feels more natural than in real life."
KCC will also hold a customer appreciation event until the 23rd to thank customers for their enthusiastic support of this commercial.
Participants can select their favorite scene from the video, leave a comment with a timestamp and their thoughts, and 30 winners will be drawn to receive a "chicken set." A timestamp is a feature that allows sharing a specific moment in the video by noting the minutes and seconds like "00:00." Clicking the timestamp link will play the video from that exact point.
The paint used by Kian84 in the video is KCC’s eco-friendly water-based paint "Sop-euro All-in-One." It can be easily applied by anyone on various materials such as metal, wood, and concrete. It requires no anti-rust paint for metal or primer to improve adhesion; you just apply it directly. You can decorate interiors with paint "so easily." Among water-based paints developed domestically, Sop-euro All-in-One is the only one that can be applied directly to metal.
A KCC representative said, "Just as Bob Ross aimed to show that even those without professional art training could easily create beautiful paintings, this commercial focuses on the message that 'painting is easy,' which Kian84 expressed well with his unique charm. We hope that through Kian84’s Paint Classroom, many people will think of paint when considering interior decoration, and we will continue to create content that communicates broadly with customers of various age groups."
