[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) will hold the ‘2020 Youth MAKER × CAREER Career Expo’ online through YouTube and in connection with Seodaemun Community Radio throughout September.
Marking its 8th year, the Seodaemun Youth Career Expo allows anyone, including elementary, middle, and high school students, out-of-school youth, non-college-bound youth, and parents, to freely participate via a dedicated website using just a PC or smartphone.
Through six themes?▲Enjoy MAKER ▲Amazing MAKER ▲Interactive Events ▲Freestyle MAKER ▲Together CAREER ▲University Student Mentoring?participants can experience making and explore various career paths suited to their aptitudes.
A MAKER refers to a person who realizes their ideas through creative making using various tools. By creating and working on what is needed, they discover their talents and gain insights for career exploration.
Operated by over 400 maker experts, professional mentors, and volunteers, this expo features more than 100 self-produced video contents on diverse topics such as 3D printing, coding, drones, art, and woodworking, as well as 111 online booths for maker and general career experiences.
Additionally, participants can join real-time comment interactions in school-specific review competitions centered on experiential content like rattan crafts and robot making, interviews with professionals who have realized their ideas, and career and academic counseling sessions with university students.
Some programs allow participants to experience making by watching videos on YouTube while using ‘DIY kits’ delivered to them.
A MAKER competition where youths virtually crowdfund each other’s ideas will also be held, adding to the excitement.
Moon Seok-jin, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, said, “This expo, planned with a focus on ‘MAKER’ in collaboration with the Korea Institute of Startup & Entrepreneurship Development and Seodaemun Career and Job Experience Support Center, will provide an opportunity to broadly understand job sectors in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution and non-face-to-face environments, helping individuals explore careers suited to themselves.”
Since being selected as the ‘Best Youth Activity’ by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family in 2014, this expo has established itself as a representative local event for youth career development, with many organizations benchmarking it.
