[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kang Juhee] A mother and daughter who were playing in the water at a beach in Jeju were swept out to sea but were rescued after directly reporting their situation using a waterproof phone case they wore around their necks.
On the 7th, the Jeju Coast Guard reported that at 10:37 a.m., they received a report that tourist A (42) and her daughter B (7) were drifting at sea about 1 km off the coast of Hado-ri, Gujwa-eup, Jeju City.
A was playing in the water with a tube when she saw her daughter being swept toward the open sea and went out to save her, but they were both carried away together.
It was reported that A directly called the Coast Guard using the phone in the waterproof case she was wearing around her neck at the time.
The Coast Guard, who responded to the report, rescued the mother and daughter and transported them to Sehwa Port, confirming that their health was not seriously affected.
The Jeju Coast Guard stated, "Recently, strong south winds have been blowing in the waters of Jeju City, strong enough to sweep even adults away," and urged, "Please enjoy water activities in designated safe areas of the beach and be careful not to let children play alone on tubes."
