Cutting-Edge IoT Shelter 'Seongdong Smart Shelter' Debuts

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) has introduced the nation’s first cutting-edge smart shelter, the ‘Seongdong Smart Shelter.’

Equipped with a UV air sterilizer that blocks 99% of airborne viruses, this shelter offers a comfortable environment to wait for buses even during severe fine dust, cold waves, and heatwaves. It is a unique shelter where concentrated smart technologies can be experienced all in one place, unlike any other in the country.

On the 3rd, the shelter opened at 10 bus stops with high passenger volumes, including in front of the Seongdong-gu Office.

Designed with three sides made of transparent tempered glass to ensure an open and spacious feel, intelligent CCTVs installed inside and outside show real-time images of buses approaching the bus stop. The AI detects abnormal behavior nearby and shares the situation with Seongdong Police Station and Fire Station. Along with a sound detection system that senses abnormal noises such as screams, it ensures safety within the shelter.

The digital signage screen provides bus and subway information as well as daily life information. Automatic screen doors controlled by thermal cameras regulate entry, and ceiling solar panels generate internal power independently, equipped with an uninterruptible power supply. This clearly demonstrates what ‘smart technology’ truly means.

The district has been fully committed to creating a visible smart environment accessible to everyone, with the vision of building a smart inclusive city during the 7th local government term. Since 2018, it has established a ‘Smart Transportation City Master Plan,’ and last year, by signing an MOU with LG Electronics for technical and design support, the project was concretized. In February, it was finally selected for the ‘Smart Town Challenge Project,’ unveiling the ‘Seongdong Smart Shelter.’

A district official said, “This is a state-of-the-art shelter that is on a completely different level from existing fine dust shelters or winter windbreak facilities. It is an optimal service space where anyone, regardless of age or gender, can experience smart daily life at once, with smart safety systems, comprehensive transportation information, infection prevention, and convenience for transportation-vulnerable groups.”

He added, “A crime prevention diagnosis has been completed by Seongdong Police Station, and we plan to operate the shelter in collaboration with the police to ensure safe use even during early morning and late-night hours.”

The most outstanding feature of the shelter is the IoT control and monitoring system. All systems within the shelter are remotely controlled and monitored via IoT from the ‘Seongdong-gu Smart City Integrated Control Center.’

All internal access, system operations, and management are adjusted from the center, enabling 24-hour integrated monitoring of any situation.

Various convenience features are a bonus. Free public Wi-Fi and mobile phone chargers are standard, and simple tables and chairs for placing drinks are installed. Priority waiting spaces for the disabled and strollers are provided. The shelter-exclusive music, developed by the Department of Music Therapy Science at Hanyang University, plays inside, offering ‘rest’ that helps forget the noise and fatigue of the busy city.

Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “Just as the answer lies in the field, we believe that realizing what residents want at the closest place, the bus stop, is true smart environmental welfare. The Seongdong-type smart shelter is an innovation in existing shelter services and a new standard for inclusive shelter services provided by smart cities that everyone can enjoy. We plan to expand the installation of shelters so that residents can experience and enjoy smart technology in their very close daily lives.”
