LG Chem Accelerates 'Digital Transformation (DX)' by Partnering with Seoul National University

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] LG Chem is teaming up with Seoul National University to lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution era by strengthening digital competitiveness through joint research on artificial intelligence (AI) and other initiatives.

On the 29th, LG Chem announced that it held a signing ceremony for the establishment of the ‘LG Chem-Seoul National University DX Industry-Academic Cooperation Center’ with the College of Engineering at Seoul National University to enhance digital transformation (DX) capabilities.

The ceremony, held in the morning at the College of Engineering at Seoul National University, was attended by LG Chem CHO (Chief Human Resources Officer) Executive Director Kim Sung-min, Executive Director of Business Innovation Jang Sung-hoon, Executive Director of Technology Planning Hong Young-joon, Senior Executive Director of DX Park Jin-yong, Dean Cha Guk-heon of the College of Engineering at Seoul National University, and Associate Dean Yoon Sung-ro, among others.

LG Chem and Seoul National University plan to collaborate to strengthen digital competitiveness by building an industry-academic cooperation infrastructure in the DX field, discovering and executing various DX projects, and nurturing outstanding talent to lead digital innovation.

LG Chem and Seoul National University pledged cooperation in three areas: ▲ promotion of DX industry-academic cooperation projects ▲ implementation of education for training core DX personnel ▲ operation of an industry-academic scholarship system for graduate students.

LG Chem and Seoul National University plan to identify and carry out joint core projects that apply digital technologies such as deep learning and data mining to key core areas including production, quality, R&D, and marketing.

To this end, candidate projects will be identified and selected by August, with project execution and follow-up projects planned over about one year. The ‘LG Chem-Seoul National University DX Industry-Academic Cooperation Center’ will also conduct training to develop core DX personnel among LG Chem employees.

Additionally, LG Chem and Seoul National University intend to nurture future talent in the digital field and strengthen industrial competitiveness through the operation of a master’s and doctoral industry-academic scholarship system. The ‘LG Chem-Seoul National University DX Industry-Academic Cooperation Center’ is scheduled to operate at the College of Engineering at Seoul National University starting in August.

Park Jin-yong, Senior Executive Director leading the DX organization, said, “LG Chem is expanding the application of machine learning-based Analytics & Optimization algorithms across various business areas, from Material Informatics (MI) to predictive maintenance of equipment, process optimization, intelligent manufacturing, new material development, and new drug substance development. In this process, collaboration with Seoul National University is meaningful as it jointly researches and develops problem-solving methods based on exploring new approaches and applying the latest technologies and techniques.”

Cha Guk-heon, Dean of the College of Engineering at Seoul National University, said, “Digital transformation based on artificial intelligence and big data is rapidly becoming an essential factor for enhancing competitiveness as it spreads beyond the scope of information technology to manufacturing and the entire industry. The DX collaboration between Seoul National University’s College of Engineering, which has world-class competitiveness in related fields, and LG Chem provides an opportunity for both institutions to further develop and solidify a foundation that can contribute nationally, which is highly significant.”

Meanwhile, LG Chem announced earlier this year its plan to actively utilize digital transformation (DX) to improve efficiency across all business areas. LG Chem has established a DX-related organization this year and is working company-wide to establish a DX vision and implementation system to become an innovative company leading digital trends, promoting the discovery and execution of innovative projects incorporating DX across all business areas.
