[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] The Korea International Trade Association and economic organizations from the four Mekong countries?Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos?delivered a joint petition titled ‘Introduction of a Fast Track for Businesspeople’ to their respective governments on the 8th.
Originally, the Thai Federation of Financial and Commercial Associations, which participates in the ‘Korea-Mekong Business Council,’ had also agreed to join the petition. However, since Thailand began allowing entry to certain foreigners, including short-term visiting businesspeople, starting July 1, it was excluded from the joint petition.
The five economic organizations stated, “Due to restrictions on the entry of overseas visitors, there has been a significant decline in economic vitality, including reduced trade in goods, contraction of global supply chains, and decreases in investment and employment.” They urged, “While respecting quarantine principles, we request that the governments of the five countries temporarily introduce a fast track system that relaxes mandatory self-quarantine periods for businesspeople entering the countries to ensure essential economic activities are guaranteed.”
Cho Hak-hee, Director of the International Business Division at KITA, said, “The fast track for businesspeople is a means to continuously manage the overseas inflow of COVID-19 while meeting cross-national business demands.” He added, “We will take the lead in restoring human and economic exchanges in cooperation with organizations from each country.” End.
