POSCO Energy Launches LNG Ship Sea Trial Business Targeting Shipbuilders

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] POSCO Energy is launching an LNG ship commissioning business targeting domestic shipbuilders.

On the 2nd, POSCO Energy announced that it signed a 'Contract for LNG Ship Commissioning Services' with major domestic shipbuilders Hyundai Heavy Industries, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries at the Gwangyang LNG Terminal.

The LNG ship commissioning business refers to a service that inspects whether LNG is stably stored and key equipment operates normally by charging natural gas into LNG carriers before the shipbuilders deliver the LNG carrier vessels to the shipowners.

To carry out the LNG ship commissioning business, POSCO Energy plans to acquire the qualification as a natural gas operator for ships through the revision of the City Gas Business Act scheduled for August this year. POSCO Energy expects that by enabling the Gwangyang LNG Terminal to provide commissioning services for LNG carriers, which are major vessels ordered by domestic shipbuilders, it will help shipbuilders secure business competitiveness.

Since taking over the Gwangyang LNG Terminal from POSCO in September last year, POSCO Energy has been promoting the expansion of related businesses along with the LNG terminal leasing business. Accordingly, since April this year, POSCO Energy has been providing Gas Trial services that lower the temperature of LNG carriers to ensure LNG is stably stored on about 150 LNG carriers of major overseas shipping companies.

Based on the know-how and customer trust gained from providing stable Gas Trial services, POSCO Energy plans to actively offer customer-oriented services such as LNG ship commissioning using the Gwangyang LNG Terminal.

A POSCO Energy official stated, “We will actively work to stabilize the newly launched LNG ship commissioning business early and secure competitiveness in the gas business through the expansion of LNG terminal-related businesses.”
