SK Incheon Petrochem, Practicing Happiness Sharing for Underprivileged Students

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] SK Incheon Petrochemicals has embarked on a happiness-sharing initiative to ensure that low-income students in the region are not excluded from online education and can attend classes smoothly. Due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, the education authorities decided last month to hold online classes for the first time in history.

On the 11th, SK Incheon Petrochemicals announced that it held a laptop PC delivery ceremony at the Seo-gu Office of Incheon Metropolitan City to support the online learning environment for low-income students. Attendees included Lee Jae-hyun, Mayor of Seo-gu, Incheon Metropolitan City; Lee Kyung-ho, Chairman of the Incheon branch of the Korean Red Cross; and Hong Wook-pyo, Head of Management Innovation at SK Incheon Petrochemicals, among other officials.

This delivery ceremony was promoted to support low-income elementary, middle, and high school students who face difficulties participating in classes due to lack of computers or outdated devices amid the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic and the shift to online classes. The 170 laptop PCs to be donated to the Incheon branch of the Korean Red Cross were previously used by SK Incheon Petrochemicals employees for work purposes. These laptops will undergo essential software installation and internal cleaning so that students can use them for remote learning. The laptops will be distributed to necessary facilities such as local children's centers and welfare facilities through the Incheon branch of the Korean Red Cross.

SK Incheon Petrochemicals will also participate in the ‘Santa of May, Exciting Random Box’ donation campaign for local seniors facing difficulties due to COVID-19. Hosted by the Seo-gu Senior Welfare Center in Incheon, this event is a campaign where participants voluntarily donate essential daily necessities, such as one pack of ramen or one bag of rice, in designated random boxes for seniors.

Furthermore, SK Incheon Petrochemicals will join the ‘Good Consumption’ movement to revitalize the local economy, which has been sluggish. To this end, all SK Incheon Petrochemicals employees have agreed to register together for Incheon Metropolitan City's electronic local currency card, the ‘Incheon e-eum Card,’ and Seo-gu’s ‘Seoro e-eum Card.’ This initiative involves a total of 150 million KRW, through which SK Incheon Petrochemicals employees will participate in local consumption to help increase sales for small business owners.
