GTX-D Line Connecting Western Seoul Metropolitan Area to Gangdong-gu Proposed... Commitment to Building Metropolitan Rail Network... Revolutionary Improvement in Transportation Convenience for 550,000 Population, Expected to Alleviate Traffic Congestion
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Jeonghoon Lee · photo) is promoting the introduction of the fourth line (GTX-D) of the metropolitan area wide express railroad.
The plan is to actively consider establishing a new line so that the metropolitan area wide express railroad (GTX), which connects cities and alleviates traffic congestion, can pass through Gangdong-gu, proactively responding to changes in transportation demand as a central area with a population of 2 million in the eastern metropolitan area in the future.
Gangdong-gu is considered the district with the greatest changes in urban spatial structure and population growth trend in Seoul. Large-scale development projects centered on Godeok, Gangil, and Sangil-dong, such as the reconstruction and maintenance project of Godeok Jugong Complexes 3 to 7 and the Godeok Gangil public housing district, are underway, and combined with the new town development project in the neighboring city of Hanam, transportation demand is expected to increase explosively in the future.
Accordingly, the district has shown strong determination to introduce the GTX-D line connecting the western metropolitan area to Gangdong-gu to improve residents' transportation welfare and regional growth.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced in its '2020 Work Plan' that it would concretize the GTX-D plan, which the government proposed as a metropolitan transportation vision last year.
Although the exact timing and target area for the introduction of the GTX-D line have not yet been decided, Gangdong-gu is quickly conducting a preliminary feasibility study and plans to build consensus among residents through policy seminars and briefings.
In addition, the district plans to closely consult with neighboring cities and submit proposals to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Seoul City so that the GTX-D line passing through the district can be reflected in the government's 4th National Railroad Network Construction Plan.
District Mayor Jeonghoon Lee said, “Gangdong-gu is expected to become a city with a population of 550,000 in 2023. If the GTX-D line, a metropolitan wide express railroad line passing through Gangdong-gu, is connected along with the ongoing extension projects of subway lines 5, 8, and 9, transportation for 550,000 residents will become innovatively convenient.” He added, “Through the introduction of GTX, which connects major hubs in the southern metropolitan area within 30 minutes, Gangdong-gu will faithfully perform its role as a transportation hub in the eastern metropolitan area and resolve transportation problems. We ask for the interest and support of residents.”
