People Party, Concentrating All Capabilities on Proportional Representation
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Kwon Eun-hee, a member of the People’s Party, announced on the 9th, “I will not run in the Gwangsan-gu Eul district of Gwangju,” and expressed, “I am truly sorry to the residents of beloved Gwangju Gwangsan and the citizens of Gwangju.”
At a press conference held at the Gwangju City Council on the same day, Representative Kwon said, “I believed that allowing the residents of Gwangsan to evaluate and judge my legislative activities in the 21st National Assembly election was responsible politics, so I did not consider changing my electoral district until the end. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, South Korea is experiencing a national disaster situation, and conflicts and polarization between the two major parties’ vested interests in the electoral districts have intensified, causing centrist political forces to lose power and the situation to continue where the two major parties’ vested interests dominate,” explaining her position.
Representative Kwon explained, “Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party, made a resolute decision to focus all the party’s capabilities on proportional representation candidates in the 21st National Assembly election, driven by an urgent desire to uphold centrist pragmatic politics and reform politics into a working politics that will lead South Korea into the future. I came to Gwangju to meet party members and local residents, conveyed Leader Ahn’s decision, and deliberated together. We agreed to unite our intentions on the path the People’s Party is taking.”
Representative Kwon stated, “The People’s Party will move forward on the path where the people win together with Ahn Cheol-soo. We will work with the citizens of Gwangju to lead South Korea into the future. I ask you to watch over this bold challenge.”
