5th Largest US Carrier Supplies 5G and 4G Network Equipment
Contracts with 4 Carriers Covering 80% of US Subscribers
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Samsung Electronics will supply 5G and 4G mobile communication equipment to US Cellular, the 5th largest mobile carrier in the United States. Samsung Electronics is expanding its presence in the US by signing supply contracts with four carriers that cover up to 80% of the US market.
On the 23rd, Samsung Electronics announced that it had signed a contract to supply 5G and 4G communication equipment with US Cellular. This is the first time Samsung Electronics is supplying mobile communication equipment to US Cellular. It is the fourth time Samsung has won a contract for 5G and 4G communication equipment business in the US, and it has signed contracts with four carriers that account for about 80% of the total US mobile subscribers.
US Cellular plans to install Samsung Electronics’ mobile communication equipment to provide a higher level of 5G service based on improved communication quality and stable indoor and outdoor coverage. It features Samsung’s self-developed 5G modem chip for base stations, which reduces power consumption while supporting communication speeds of up to 10Gbps.
Samsung Electronics plans to supply various 5G solutions based on the 3GPP international standard, including the 5G integrated base station (Access Unit). The 5G integrated base station integrates the wireless communication and digital communication parts into one product, minimizing size and weight, making it easy to install on streetlights, building walls, etc., and reducing the cost of laying optical cables, thereby saving time and costs required for building 5G networks.
Mike Irizarry, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of US Cellular, said, "Together with Samsung Electronics, we will provide innovative 5G and 4G technologies, enhanced service experiences, and new business opportunities." He added, "Our collaboration with Samsung Electronics will play a central role in expanding 4G LTE and 5G services and accelerating 5G innovation."
Kim Woojun, Vice President and Head of Strategy Marketing Team at Samsung Electronics’ Network Business Division, said, "The importance of Samsung Electronics’ 5G solutions is increasing across various mobile networks in the US." He added, "We will continue our efforts for 5G innovation, leadership, and the development of new communication technologies."
