Responding to High Unit Prices and Rapidly Growing Market Size
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are strengthening their development of ‘gaming monitors.’ This is interpreted as a response to the high unit price of high-performance premium gaming monitors and the rapidly growing market size.
According to the industry on the 24th, Samsung Electronics recently unveiled three new gaming monitor models under the ‘Odyssey’ brand at CES 2020, which recently concluded. The brand, first applied to high-performance gaming laptops in 2017, has been uniformly applied to gaming monitors as well.
The new G9 model features a maximum brightness of 1000 nits and a high resolution of 5120x1440 (Dual QHD). The screen ratio is 32:9 ultra-wide. The G7 is a 16:9 wide monitor with a maximum brightness of 600 nits and a resolution of 2560x1440 (QHD). Both the G9 and G7 implement the world’s highest curvature of 1000R. This enhances immersion and reduces eye fatigue by maintaining a consistent distance between the eyes and the monitor regardless of its position.
These monitors support a 1ms (one-thousandth of a second) response time and a 240Hz high refresh rate. The screen input from the computer is reflected within one-thousandth of a second, and the screen refreshes up to 240 times per second, enabling smooth video output. They support NVIDIA G-Sync compatibility and AMD FreeSync 2. These technologies synchronize the refresh rate of the 3D output from the computer with the monitor’s refresh rate.
LG Electronics introduced the 2020 model gaming monitor LG UltraGear. It features a maximum 160Hz refresh rate and a 1ms response time. The panel uses LG Display’s Nano IPS technology. It supports VESA Display Stream Compression (DSC), allowing 4K video to be displayed without loss. LG Electronics also introduced ‘LG UltraWide,’ which enables multiple tasks to be performed simultaneously on a wide screen.
According to market research firm TrendForce WitsView, gaming monitor shipments this year are expected to reach 11.1 million units, a 30.5% increase from 8.5 million units last year. An industry insider said, “With the expansion of the gaming monitor market, products applying the latest technologies are expected to increase in the future.”
