“The Last Godfather,” both directed by and starring Korean comedian Shim Hyung-rae, has claimed the No.1 spot on the weekend box office chart for two straight weeks, according to data by Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) on Monday.
“Godfather,” currently showing in 518 theaters nationwide, attracted 396,289 moviegoers during the weekend of January 7 to 9.
A local comedy filmed in the United States and also starring Hollywood actors such as Harvey Keitel, Michael Rispoli and Jason Mewes, "Godfather" is about rural Korean boy Yong-gu taken to New York to be trained as the heir of a large mafia group.
New Korean film “Heartbeat,” which opened in 503 theaters starting January 5, debuted at No.2 on the box office, selling a total of 318,414 ticket during the past three days.
"Heartbeat," a suspense thriller starring Park Hae-il and Kim Yun-jin, depicts on a conflict between a son who tries to save his mother’s life and a young mother who will go to any length to secure a heart donor for her dying daughter.
“Hello Ghost,” previously second on the chart, stepped down to third place after bringing in 306,180 viewers last weekend.
“Ghost,” starring Cha Tae-hyun and Kang Yae-won is a comedy about a guy who starts seeing four ghost -- a pervert, a chain smoker, a crying woman and a child -- that will not leave his side until he grants them their wish.
Other films that showed up on top 10 list during the past weekend were: action thriller “The Yellow Sea,” fantasy adventure “Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Park 1,” Belgian animation “Sammy’s Adventures: The Secret Passage,” SF film “TRON: Legacy,” Japanese animations “Metal Fight Bay Blade The Movie & Duel Masters,” and “Pokemon DP: The Ruler of Illusion Zoroark” and documentary “Don’t Cry For Me, Sudan.”
