Park Chandae, a candidate for the Democratic Party of Korea's party leader, visited Gwangju for two days starting on June 27 in an effort to win over voters in the Honam region. This is his first official schedule in Honam since announcing his candidacy, signaling the start of his campaign to secure support within the party.
At 7:30 p.m. on this day, Park held a "Gwangju Regional Talk Concert" at the multipurpose auditorium on the 9th floor of Jeonil Building 245 in Dong-gu, Gwangju, where he met with local residents. Prior to the event, Park used his Facebook page to criticize the Yoon Suk Yeol administration's livelihood and economic policies, highlighting the sharp increase in loans and delinquencies among the self-employed and the rise in business closures. He emphasized that the recovery of small business owners and local economies should be a top priority.
The following morning, Park plans to pay his respects at the National May 18 Democratic Cemetery in Buk-gu, Gwangju. This visit to a symbolic site is intended to underscore the unity of the democratic camp and reaffirm the party's values.
During his stay in Gwangju, Park will also hold meetings with metropolitan and basic local council members, focusing on strengthening the party's organizational structure and consolidating support in the Honam region. As a candidate for party leader, he aims to listen to voices from the field and share his vision for the party's future direction.
The Democratic Party of Korea will hold its national convention on August 2 to elect the next party leader. In this leadership race, the Honam region, which accounts for a large proportion of the party's total membership and where the weighting of votes from dues-paying members has increased, is considered a key battleground. The Honam regional primary will be held on July 26.
