"Life-Threatening Levels"... New York Declares State of Emergency Amid Historic Deluge

Heavy rain in New York, USA caused a commuting chaos for citizens. According to The New York Times (NYT) on the 29th of last month (local time), more than 10 cm of rain poured intensively from the previous night due to the influence of a tropical storm, resulting in flooding damage at transportation facilities such as subways and highways.


The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which manages public transportation in New York, suspended operations on the Harlem Line and Hudson Line connecting Manhattan and the Bronx on the morning of the 29th.

Part of LaGuardia Airport was temporarily closed due to the heavy rain, and bus services connecting the airport and the subway were also suspended. The FDR Drive, the East River waterfront road on the east side of Manhattan, was also closed.


New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the heavy rain that day as "life-threatening." New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared a state of emergency and advised citizens to stay at home.


The rainfall in Central Park, the heart of Manhattan, measured 5 inches (about 12.7 cm) from midnight to 11 a.m. that day. It was the highest amount recorded since Hurricane Ida, which caused significant damage to the New York area two years ago.


However, New York City announced that no casualties were reported due to the heavy rain that day.
