Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education Supports 130,000 Students with Education Expenses and Benefits... Intensive Application Period Until the 18th 2022 Education Benefit Support Details

[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education will operate a concentrated application period for educational benefits and educational expenses support for elementary, middle, and high school students from low-income families from the 2nd to the 18th.

On the 3rd, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education announced that the total budget for educational expenses support this year is 65 billion KRW, and it plans to support about 130,000 students. The number of eligible recipients has increased by 30,000 compared to last year.

Through educational benefits, students can receive support for educational activity support expenses for elementary, middle, and high school students, high school entrance fees, tuition fees, and high school textbook costs. In the educational expenses category, support is available for high school tuition (entrance fees, tuition, school operation support expenses), high school meal fees, after-school free course vouchers, educational informatization (internet communication fees), and beneficiary-borne expenses (small-scale themed educational travel expenses, training activity expenses). If students receive free education and free meals support, they are excluded from support for high school tuition and meal fees.

This year, the differentiated support for tuition, dormitory fees, and album fees by admission type has been abolished. Students with household income at or below 60% of the median income can receive support regardless of admission type. Among tuition fees, school operation support expenses can be supported up to an annual limit of 731,000 KRW. The criteria for small-scale themed educational travel expenses and training activity expenses for high school students have been relaxed from the lower-income class to those with household income at or below 60% of the median income. For after-school free course vouchers, support has been expanded from the previous 60% of median income to 70% of median income starting this year.

All educational activity support funds for elementary, middle, and high school students under educational benefits have increased by an average of 21.1%. For elementary students, the amount changed from 286,000 KRW to 331,000 KRW; for middle school students, from 376,000 KRW to 466,000 KRW; and for high school students, from 448,000 KRW to 554,000 KRW.

In June, a temporary 'Educational Benefits Special Learning Support Fund' project will also be implemented for educational benefits recipients. A learning support fund of 100,000 KRW per person will be provided through various payment methods such as credit card points, which can be used to purchase EBS paid content or learning materials. To receive the Educational Benefits Special Learning Support Fund, eligibility for educational benefits must be confirmed. Families wishing to receive educational benefits are encouraged to apply during this concentrated application period.

Parents who wish to apply for educational benefits and educational expenses support can visit their local community service center or apply online. Applications are accepted year-round, but since payments start from the month of application, it is advantageous to apply during the concentrated application period. For detailed information about educational expenses and educational benefits support, inquiries can be made to the Ministry of Education Central Counseling Center or the Ministry of Health and Welfare Call Center.

The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education stated, "With the improvements in educational benefits and educational expenses support this year, we expect support for economically disadvantaged students to become more thorough and extensive, and we will continue to strive to ensure that more students can receive educational welfare benefits."
