SKT Develops Interactive Remote Class Service Based on 'Mideoseu'

[Asia Economy Reporter Seolgina Cho] SK Telecom announced on the 21st that it will develop an interactive remote learning service based on its group video call service ‘MeetUs,’ utilizing its 5G and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

The MeetUs-based interactive remote learning service is designed to provide students with education comparable to offline classes in public education, especially in situations where online learning is inevitable due to the impact of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The service development is being promoted as part of the Korea Information Society Agency (NIA)’s ‘5G Advanced Technology and Convergence Service Public Sector Leading Project,’ with participation from SK Telecom and the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education.

Through collaboration with the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, SK Telecom plans to provide the interactive remote learning service to approximately 200,000 students across 312 elementary, middle, and high schools in the Gwangju area. The goal is to complete development by the end of this year and apply it to frontline schools starting from the first semester of 2021.

SK Telecom will offer ▲high-quality video calls ▲enhanced teacher-student communication functions through video and voice recognition technologies ▲optimized education UI/UX. Additionally, essential features for actual classes will be supported, such as conducting surveys and quizzes within the application during remote classes, and dividing or merging group chat rooms into smaller groups for group study.

The company expects that this project will not only improve students’ right to learn through online classes but also activate the video education content market using AI, AR, VR, and other technologies in the future.

Hyun-A Lee, Head of SK Telecom’s AI Service Division, stated, “We will develop the interactive remote learning service optimized for the domestic educational environment,” adding, “We hope this service development will contribute to realizing the future educational environment in the post-COVID era.”
