The Supreme Court's Third Division (Presiding Justice Lee Heungku) on August 28 finalized the lower court's ruling, sentencing Mr. A (46), who was indicted on charges including murder, to 25 years in prison and ordering him to wear a location-tracking electronic device (ankle monitor) for 15 years.

The Supreme Court stated, "There was no error in the lower court's judgment that violated the rules of logic and experience, exceeded the limits of free evaluation of evidence, or misapplied legal principles regarding mental or physical impairment. The sentence of 25 years in prison for the defendant cannot be considered excessively unjust."

Mr. A was brought to trial on charges of murder for stabbing Ms. B, an employee with whom he was in a romantic relationship, 66 times with a weapon at a karaoke bar in Donghae, Gangwon Province, in the early morning of July 10 last year. Investigations revealed that after Ms. B informed him of the breakup the previous day, Mr. A visited her the next day and fatally attacked her with a weapon.

Both the first and second trials sentenced Mr. A to 25 years in prison and ordered him to wear an electronic monitoring device for 15 years. Mr. A appealed, claiming mental incapacity due to intoxication, but the Supreme Court found no fault in the previous rulings and dismissed the appeal.
