Incheon Seo District announced on August 8 that it has selected "Seohae District" as the new name for the district, which will officially launch in July next year.
The district explained that, according to a public opinion survey on the new name conducted from July 21 to August 6, "Seohae District" received a higher preference rate of 58.5% (1,169 respondents) compared to the other candidate, "Cheongna District," which received 41.6% (831 respondents).
This survey was carried out through telephone interviews (both landline and mobile) with 2,000 residents aged 18 or older who will reside in the separated Seo District following the administrative system reorganization in July next year.
The district finalized the new name at the 6th District Name Change Promotion Committee held on this day, and plans to proceed with procedures such as collecting opinions from the Seo District Council and the Incheon Metropolitan Council.
A representative from the district stated, "We plan to proceed with legislative procedures, such as enacting relevant laws, in accordance with the administrative system reorganization schedule," and added, "Once the 'Law on the Name Change of Incheon Seo District' is enacted, the new name of the district will be officially confirmed."
Meanwhile, starting July 1 next year, Incheon's administrative system will be reorganized so that the current Jung District and Dong District will be divided into "Yeongjong District," centered on Yeongjongdo, and "Jemulpo District," covering the inland areas of Jung and Dong Districts.
"Seo District" will separate the Geomdan area to establish the new "Geomdan District," while the remaining area will continue as Seo District.
As a result, Incheon will shift from its current system of 2 counties and 8 districts to a system of 2 counties and 9 districts.
