Four Courses Including Cooking, Exercise, and Life Education
On July 8, Buk-gu District in Gwangju announced that it will operate customized programs for middle-aged single-person households until the end of the year. The purpose of this initiative is to alleviate social isolation among people aged 40 to 64 and to support the formation of social networks.
The project is titled "A Brighter Me Project, Single-Up! (single+upgrade)." It was planned in response to the fact that more than 40% of the approximately 87,000 single-person households in Buk-gu are middle-aged. A budget of 26 million won, secured after being selected for a Gwangju City-led public contest earlier this year, will be used to operate the program for a total of 230 participants.
The main programs include hobby and health activities such as home-cooked meal classes, Pilates, and woodworking, as well as life education sessions such as retirement planning, financial education, and organizing and storage. All courses are offered free of charge, and participants are recruited on a first-come, first-served basis for each session.
Buk-gu District plans to go beyond one-time education by connecting participants to self-help groups, social dining, and volunteer programs, aiming to build a community. Applications can be submitted through the Buk-gu Family Center website, and further details are available from the Buk-gu District Office's Women and Childcare Division or the Family Center.
