On June 12, President Lee Jae Myung held his first phone conversation with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, agreeing to cooperate in the fields of defense and mining.
The Office of the President announced that President Lee spoke with Prime Minister Albanese for approximately 15 minutes starting at 17:00 on this day.
According to the Office of the President, President Lee expressed his gratitude for Prime Minister Albanese's congratulations on his inauguration and noted that South Korea and Australia, as comprehensive strategic partners, have cooperated for the stability and prosperity of the region and the international community.
The Office of the President stated that the two leaders agreed to further strengthen cooperation in various fields, including defense and the defense industry, clean energy, and supply chains involving critical minerals. This decision is based on the long-standing trust and solidarity between the two countries, which dates back to Australia's participation in the Korean War.
In addition, the two leaders agreed to enhance communication and cooperation for tangible progress in achieving peace on the Korean Peninsula and resolving the North Korean nuclear issue. They also committed to actively work together for the successful hosting of the 2025 APEC Summit, which is scheduled to be held in Gyeongju in the second half of this year.
