Suncheon City in South Jeolla Province (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) announced on June 12 that it has begun maintenance and replacement work on concrete decorative manholes, which have low durability and threaten pedestrian safety.

Color concrete "decorative manholes," which were installed nationwide for reasons of urban aesthetics and low cost, have become corroded over the past 30 years, raising concerns about potential safety accidents.

The city is conducting sequential inspections in vulnerable areas to ensure citizen safety. Warning signs have been placed to remind pedestrians not to step on manholes, and fall prevention devices are being installed inside the manholes.

In addition, the city has allocated a budget of 300 million won this year to replace 154 locations first with iron manholes, which are resistant to wear, damage, and corrosion, and have a minimum lifespan of over 30 years.

A city official stated, "We are prioritizing citizen safety by continuously inspecting and maintaining aging decorative manholes," and added, "We urge citizens to exercise extra caution when walking over decorative manholes that have not yet been replaced."
