"Big tent is good, but we must not hand over leadership"
Kim Moonsoo, former Minister of Employment and Labor, and Han Donghoon, former leader of the People Power Party, both finalists in the party's presidential primary runoff, stated on April 30 that even if a unification of candidates were to occur, the People Power Party candidate must remain at the center.
During the People Power Party's presidential primary runoff debate held that day, former leader Han said, "I believe it was wrong for the party leadership to ask Jeong Daechul, president of the Constitution Association and a member of the Donggyodong faction, to urge Acting President and Prime Minister Han Ducksoo to run for office."
In response, former Minister Kim agreed, saying, "Indirectly making such requests to Acting President Han is neither the proper way nor the right thing to do."
Former leader Han also addressed reports that Lee Nakyon, senior advisor of the New Future Democratic Party, and others have demanded a change of the party's name as a condition for forming a 'big tent.' He stated, "It pains me to think that party members may feel a sense of shame and lose confidence," and added, "Expansion is good, but handing over leadership to figures from the Moon Jaein administration is not acceptable."
He continued, "There are even claims that Acting President Han has contacted advisor Lee Nakyon. While we can work with anyone to win, the People Power Party must remain at the core."
Former Minister Kim also responded, "Even though the party is facing many difficulties, there are fundamental principles that must be upheld, and I believe this is a mistake."
