The People Power Party has reportedly appointed Representative Joo Ho-young, who holds the record for the most six-term memberships within the party and currently serves as the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, as the chairman of the party-level Constitutional Amendment Special Committee.
According to a key party official on the 3rd, the People Power Party plans to appoint Representative Joo as chairman following a resolution by the Emergency Response Committee as early as the 6th. Initially, there was consideration for Floor Leader Kwon Seong-dong to take the chairmanship, but ultimately Representative Joo was appointed.
The People Power Party had previously declared its intention to launch a special committee to prepare for an early presidential election and to publicize discussions on constitutional amendments within the party. Within the party, alternatives such as a four-year renewable term system departing from the current presidential system, a parliamentary system, and a dual executive system are being discussed.
The ruling and opposition parties have yet to reach an agreement on forming a constitutional amendment special committee at the National Assembly level. The People Power Party insists that a joint constitutional amendment special committee involving both parties should be launched promptly, but the Democratic Party of Korea maintains that discussions on an additional supplementary budget bill for the livelihood economy should take precedence.
