After 3 Years of Trying Without Pregnancy... The Shocking Diagnosis Received by the Couple Visiting the Hospital

Husband's Biological Sex Is 'Female' Not 'Male'
Diagnosed with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia
"Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) or Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome"

A Chinese couple who had been unable to conceive for three years visited a hospital and received a shocking diagnosis. The husband's biological sex was revealed to be female.

According to foreign media on the 16th, Mr. A, a man in his 30s living in Shanghai, China, visited a hospital after not conceiving with his wife of the same age for three years and received a shocking examination result. An ultrasound examination found no testes in Mr. A, but instead a uterus was present.

The hospital explained that Mr. A's condition was "congenital adrenal hyperplasia." This is a genetic disorder caused by a deficiency of a specific enzyme, leading to hormonal imbalance and symptoms such as fetal genital development disorders, pigmentation, and salt loss. Although this man was biologically female, his adrenal glands secreted a large amount of androgens, which manifested male characteristics.

The medical staff described this condition as a "disorder of sex development (DSD) or androgyne syndrome," explaining that "it can occur at birth or during adolescence, and the adrenal glands that secrete sex hormones become enlarged, causing male characteristics to appear despite the actual sex being female." It was reported that this man is undergoing surgery to restore male genitalia and androgen therapy for hormone regulation.

Meanwhile, worldwide, only about 400 cases of newborns with such rare congenital diseases have been reported in the medical field.

Androgyne syndrome refers to a person having both male and female reproductive organs, that is, both ovaries and testes, and it is further divided into true and pseudo types. The true type has both ovaries and testes and can function as both female and male, but usually does not produce sperm and is infertile. The pseudo type has reproductive organs of only one sex, with two cases: having ovaries but external genitalia resembling male, or having testes but external genitalia resembling female.

Experts said, "People with this condition not only experience abnormal secondary sexual characteristics but also have difficulty having children," and advised, "They should recognize warning signs felt in their bodies and immediately visit a hospital to consult a doctor." Warning signs include difficulty identifying genitalia at birth, difficulty having children, and experiencing abnormal secondary sexual characteristics.
