[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Junran] Somalia in Africa was identified as the country most in need of humanitarian aid due to political, economic, and climate crises. Ukraine also entered the top 10 crisis countries for the first time.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC), an international humanitarian relief organization, announced on the 27th the '2023 Emergency Crisis Country List' of 10 countries predicted to have a high risk of humanitarian crises based on various statistical data.

Somalia, ranked first, is expected to face a worsening humanitarian crisis next year due to war and conflict, economic turmoil, and climate crises. In particular, the crisis response system is reportedly not functioning properly as the worst drought in decades has compounded the long-standing conflicts.

The impact of the Russia-Ukraine war disrupting wheat imports was also a reason for Somalia rising seven places from 8th on last year's emergency crisis country list.

Following Somalia, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Yemen, Syria, South Sudan, Burkina Faso, Haiti, and Ukraine ranked 2nd to 10th respectively.

Ukraine was the only European country to make the top 10 this year. The IRC explained, "As the war with Russia prolongs, millions of Ukrainians are not receiving adequate water, electricity, or heating and are exposed to severe cold," adding, "The need for humanitarian aid will increase."

David Miliband, IRC President, said, "Crisis countries face intertwined risks of political, economic, security, and climate crises," and emphasized, "Action is needed to rebuild social protection measures."
