Cinecube, an art cinema operated by Tcast under the Taekwang Group, announced on August 26 that its film "Times of the Theater," produced to commemorate the 25th anniversary of its opening, has been officially invited to the "Korean Cinema Today - Panorama" section of the 30th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).
This anthology film consists of two short films: "Chimpanzee" directed by Lee Jongpil and "Naturally" directed by Yoon Ga-eun. It was planned to shed new light on the significance of theaters and art films. The film will have its world premiere at BIFF, which runs from September 17 to 26, and during the festival, there will be guest visits (GV) and stage greetings with the directors and cast in attendance.
"Chimpanzee" tells the story of three cinephiles who meet by chance in Gwanghwamun in 2000 and are drawn into a mysterious tale about a chimpanzee. The film is directed by Lee Jongpil, known for "Escape" (2024) and "Samjin Company English Class" (2020), and stars Kim Daemyung, Wonstein, Lee Soogyung, and Hong Sabin.
"Naturally" depicts the story of child actors and a director striving for "natural acting" on a film set. Directed by Yoon Ga-eun, who previously directed "The World of Us" (2016) and "The House of Us" (2019), the film features Ko Ahsung in the role of the director.
Since its opening in 2000, Cinecube has established itself as a leading art cinema in Korea. Its operator, Tcast, has been involved in both importing and distributing films since 2010, introducing international titles such as "Like Father, Like Son," "Shoplifters," and "Perfect Days." "Times of the Theater" is Tcast's first production, and after its screening at the festival, it is scheduled for theatrical release in the first half of next year.
Park Jiye, team leader at Cinecube, stated, "It is especially meaningful that this project will meet audiences for the first time at the Busan International Film Festival," adding, "We plan to continue expanding the role of art cinemas and pursue various projects that connect creators and audiences."
