Samsung Electronics to Implement Digital Twin in Semiconductor Factory by 2030

Plan Announced at US 'GTC 2024'
NVIDIA Omniverse Platform Application

Samsung Electronics will implement a digital twin in its semiconductor factories by 2030 based on NVIDIA Omniverse. A digital twin replicates the real world in a virtual environment and is expected to be a key solution to improve efficiency in production facility operations and semiconductor manufacturing.

Yoon Seok-jin, Executive Director of Samsung Electronics Innovation Center, attended 'GTC 2024' held in San Jose, USA, on the 19th (local time) and gave a session presentation titled 'Omniverse-based Fab (Factory) Digital Twin Platform for the Semiconductor Industry.'

On that day, Executive Director Yoon detailed plans to virtually replicate semiconductor factories using NVIDIA Omniverse. Omniverse is an AI-based digital twin platform introduced by NVIDIA. It allows previewing factory operations and semiconductor production processes in a virtual space to reduce various issues.

Since setting the goal to introduce digital twins in 2022, Samsung Electronics has been collaborating with NVIDIA on several tasks. Currently, the modeling time takes 7 minutes, with plans to reduce it to 5 minutes in the future.

Executive Director Yoon explained that despite several trials and errors, the related work is progressing successfully, stating, "The goal is to realize a fully automated fab by 2030."

NVIDIA explained that with this approach, Samsung Electronics can complete the world's first fab digital twin platform corresponding to Smart Factory Level 5.

Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, emphasized the necessity of applying Omniverse during his keynote speech at GTC 2024 held the previous day, saying, "Design, manufacturing, simulation, and operation must be done entirely digitally."
