[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] Wang Yoonjong, Secretary for Economic Security at the National Security Office, will visit the United States to engage in discussions with the White House National Security Council (NSC) and the Economic Security Dialogue. The purpose is to discuss current economic security issues and response strategies between South Korea and the U.S. Both sides plan to review key economic security issues such as responses to the global supply chain crisis in semiconductors and batteries, as well as cooperation in advanced technology sectors.
According to the Presidential Office on the 4th, Secretary Wang will depart on the 6th and hold a meeting on the 7th in Washington D.C. with Tarun Chhabra, Senior Director for Technology and National Security at the U.S. NSC. He will stay in the U.S. for three days and is also scheduled to meet officials from the State Department and the Department of Energy. Through this meeting, the practical work on economic security issues agreed upon at the previous South Korea-U.S. summit is expected to be actively advanced.
The Economic Security Dialogue is a channel established by South Korea and the U.S. to regularly consult on economic security issues, created following the South Korea-U.S. summit held in Seoul last May. The Yoon Seok-yeol administration recently established a related secretary position within the National Security Office due to the growing prominence of economic security issues.
Secretary Wang was originally scheduled to visit the U.S. in early last month. However, the schedule was postponed to July due to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit and other events.
