Perfect for Spending Christmas Alone!
Small and Precious Convenience Store Mini Cake♥
When carols start playing on the streets, I find myself facing the same dilemma every year. What kind of cake should I eat this year? This is the thought that crosses the editor’s mind most often around this time.
The homebody editor usually enjoys a modest party alone on Christmas. However, the cake is always a problem. I want to enjoy the romance of December with cake, but a large whole cake feels too overwhelming to eat alone, and a slice of cake somehow feels unsatisfying.
A pretty appearance that fits the party atmosphere, a suitable portion for one person, and a pleasantly sweet taste that isn’t greasy. After searching here and there, I found a cake that perfectly meets these three criteria. Surprisingly, it wasn’t at a fancy bakery or cafe, but at the convenience store right in front of my house.
What the editor discovered was a mini whole cake released by Samlip’s dessert brand ‘Cafe Snow’! The one in the red box is the ‘Hershey’s Rich Chocolate Cake’, and the one in the blue box is the ‘Pororo Milk Mini Cake’. Just like actual cake packaging, the box has a handle, and when you take out the cake wrapped once more in transparent plastic, it comes with a fork and a candle. The cake base has bumps to keep the cake’s shape perfectly intact.
Hershey’s Rich Chocolate Cake
First to try is the Hershey’s Rich Chocolate Cake. The cake, filled with chocolate cream and rich ganache, is packaged inside a charming little box. This cake is about 10cm in diameter, much smaller than a typical whole cake.
Carefully cutting into the small and precious cake, which has cute chocolate cream piped along its shape and small chocolate decorations, I checked the cross-section. The soft chocolate cream in the center of the cake is wrapped by the cake layers. The cream inside is less dense than the ganache on top and has a color resembling melted milk chocolate.
The visual score is a perfect 100. But was the taste just as perfect? Tasting the cake, it was almost identical to the chocolate cakes from dessert shops. Instead of the bitterness of dark chocolate, the smooth taste of milk chocolate dominates. It skillfully avoids the greasiness sometimes found in convenience store chocolate desserts and fully preserves the authentic chocolate flavor. The chocolate cream on top offers a deeper and richer sweetness than the filling of a chocolate cream horn, while the cream inside delivers a pleasant milk chocolate sweetness. The amount of cream is just right, and the cake layers are very moist, resulting in an exquisite soft texture.
Pororo Milk Mini Cake
The next contender is the Pororo Milk Mini Cake. It is the same size as the chocolate cake introduced earlier and, true to its name ‘milk cake,’ it is dressed in pure white cream. Between the red candy and light green apple cream that evoke a Christmas atmosphere, the cake’s star, a Pororo plastic topper, is inserted.
This cake is not like a fresh cream cake with fruit inside but rather a type filled only with cream, similar to a milk roll cake. While there is plenty of cream between the layers, the cream coating on the outside of the cake is very thin, so thin that some cream peels off when removing the cake band.
The cake tastes very similar to a waffle filled with apple jam and cream. I wondered if the vegetable-based cream would be greasy, but it harmonizes with the refreshing taste of apple, making it light and fresh. The milk cream between the soft cake layers has a smooth yet slightly firm texture. You can taste the milk, but the sweetness is not excessive. The decision to put plenty of milk cream inside the cake while applying only a thin layer on the outside was a masterstroke. The amount of cream is very appropriate, so the cake is overall not greasy and feels clean. This cake is perfect for those who dislike excessive cream and often remove it when eating cake.
With soft lighting, gentle carols, hot coffee, and this mini cake, you can create a wonderful and sweet Christmas atmosphere. This cake, which holds its own even compared to dessert shop cakes, is recommended for those preparing a minimal home party alone on Christmas.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
