[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] Heo Kang-il, who worked as a manager at the North Korean Ryugyong Restaurant located in Zhejiang Province, China, and defected, has filed a complaint with the police against lawyer Jang Mo of the Lawyers for a Democratic Society (Minbyun) on charges of defamation by false facts.
The Lawyers for Human Rights and Unification of Korea (Hanbyun) stated in a press release on the 2nd, "Heo said that lawyer Jang made defamatory false statements during an interview explaining the circumstances of his defection on a radio program last May," and added, "On behalf of Heo, a complaint was submitted to the Seocho Police Station in Seoul on the 26th of last month."
Heo is reported to claim that lawyer Jang violated confidentiality obligations regarding his client by mentioning the circumstances of his defection to the United States in March 2019 during the interview, thereby defaming him.
Previously, in 2016, Heo defected along with 12 female employees.
