Busan Port Showcases Leading Decarbonization Case at UNCTAD Africa Port Workshop

Busan Port Recognized as a "Green Port Model" by the International Community

Busan Port Authority (BPA), led by President Song Sangkeun, was invited to the 'UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Africa Port Capacity Building Workshop' held in Tangier, Morocco from November 25 to 27, 2025, where it presented the case of Busan Port's decarbonization efforts.

This workshop was organized by UNCTAD and hosted by Tangier Port in Morocco to support energy transition and the development of sustainable strategies at major African ports.

The event featured speakers from UNCTAD, the International Energy Agency (IEA), global maritime and port infrastructure consultancy Moffat & Nicole, as well as representatives from major ports and organizations such as Antwerp Port and Amsterdam Port.

BPA focused its presentation on the electrification of port equipment and the establishment of onshore power supply (OPS) infrastructure as key examples of Busan Port's decarbonization policies. The proactive electrification of yard cranes (Transfer Cranes, TC) since 2007 was highlighted as a model that demonstrated both operational efficiency and carbon reduction effects, drawing significant attention.

BPA shared in detail the challenges encountered during the electrification process, step-by-step improvement experiences, and the collaborative framework with terminal operators, which garnered considerable interest from attendees. Immediately following the presentation, separate meetings were held with port operation and technology companies on site, leading to practical discussions on cooperation based on the Busan Port case.

Song Sangkeun, President of BPA, stated, "Tangier is considered a key logistics hub not only in Africa but also in the Mediterranean region. It is highly meaningful that Busan Port was introduced as a leading case of decarbonization on such an international stage." He added, "We will continue to actively share Busan Port's experience with the international community and fulfill our role in leading the global transition to green ports."
