The Daegu Office of Education announced that it has selected five schools as "Outstanding Schools for Pilot Operation of Dietary Education in 2025" and will present the Daegu Superintendent of Education Award on December 8.
Five schools-Daegu Dalseo Elementary School, Daegu Haeseo Elementary School, Taeyang Kindergarten, Songhyeon Girls' High School, and Daegu Hansol Elementary School-will receive the Daegu Superintendent of Education Award.
The pilot operation of dietary education was implemented to help students develop healthy eating habits on their own and to strengthen practical dietary education that connects the curriculum, school meals, and families. To this end, 24 kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high schools focused on four key areas: curriculum-linked dietary education, school nutrition counseling, operation of nutrition and dietary education clubs, and operation of customized and standardized healthy meal services.
The evaluation involved four experts, including nutrition teachers from the school meal advisory panel and teachers with experience as judges for the Ministry of Education's Outstanding Schools. They assessed each school's achievements based on specificity, creativity, effectiveness, and potential for expansion.
The five schools ultimately selected operated student-centered dietary education models in each field and achieved tangible changes.
In the area of curriculum-linked dietary education, Daegu Dalseo Elementary School collaborated with staff, families, and the local community to run grade-specific curriculum-linked classes and meal-based food culture experience programs, which improved students' positive perceptions of school meals. In the same area, Daegu Haeseo Elementary School established an integrated dietary education system by connecting classroom and meal life through programs promoting low-sugar, low-calorie, and low-picky eating practices.
In the field of school nutrition counseling, Taeyang Kindergarten operated a seven-step integrated nutrition education model based on preliminary nutrition counseling, extending from the school garden and market to the home, which helped improve young children's picky eating habits. In the area of nutrition and dietary education club operation, Songhyeon Girls' High School expanded activities such as Zero Food Waste Day and mushroom cultivation throughout the school through club-centered research, experiments, and practical activities.
In the field of customized standardized healthy meal service operation, Daegu Hansol Elementary School established a meal service system that considers student health and the climate environment by implementing customized menus using Daegu-standard recipes and a food waste reduction campaign.
This selection of outstanding schools is the first case since the enactment of the "Daegu Office of Education Student Nutrition and Dietary Education Support Ordinance" on November 10. The ordinance provides a legal basis for systematically supporting the establishment of basic plans, experiential education, club activities, nutrition counseling, and family-linked education.
In accordance with the ordinance, the Daegu Office of Education plans to establish a basic plan for nutrition and dietary education every year and expand field-oriented practical education by strengthening experiential programs and nutrition counseling.
Daegu Superintendent of Education Kang Eunhee stated, "The schools selected this time have successfully operated student-centered dietary education models and created meaningful changes. We will continue to actively promote best practices and strengthen experiential programs and nutrition counseling to establish a sustainable dietary education system that enhances students' health capabilities."
