Donghae City Invests 16 Billion Won to Launch Full-Scale 'Jeoncheon Local Stream Maintenance Project'

Donghae City to Transform Jeoncheon Stream into a Future-Oriented, Safe, and Water-Friendly River
7.92km to Be Upgraded by 2027, Enhancing Safety and Leisure Value
A New Leap Forward as a Disaster-Resilient and Future-Ready Waterfront Space

Jeoncheon Stream, a representative leisure space in Donghae City, Gangwon Province, will be transformed into a new leisure and healing area that not only enhances disaster prevention functions but also significantly expands its waterfront spaces. On November 28, Donghae City announced that it will officially launch the "Jeoncheon Local Stream Maintenance Project," with a total project cost of 16 billion won (60% funded by the province, 40% by the city).

The project area covers a total of 7.92 kilometers, stretching from the Jeoncheon Mureung Park Golf Course to the Gaetmok area. The maintenance plan includes: ▲ improvement of three high-water embankments (L=3.0km) ▲ construction of two retaining walls (L=0.3km) ▲ one pedestrian bridge ▲ one stepping-stone crossing ▲ one fishway ▲ improvement of two riverside (water-friendly) spaces ▲ riverbed maintenance, among other efforts. These initiatives are aimed at dramatically improving both the safety and usability of Jeoncheon Stream.

Since 2022, Donghae City has driven changes to Jeoncheon by promoting a variety of citizen-friendly projects, including a grass plaza, children's traffic plaza, floating bridge garden deck, cherry blossom lighting, park golf course, and character park.

This maintenance project is based on the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province’s comprehensive local stream maintenance plan and Donghae City’s basic river plan. The focus is on reinforcing aging river structures to ensure disaster safety and expanding waterfront facilities to further enhance the spatial value of Jeoncheon Stream.

Currently, the on-site office has been established, and construction engineers and project managers have been deployed. All administrative procedures, such as public project approval and the announcement of the river construction implementation plan, have also been swiftly completed. Starting in December, Donghae City will begin groundworks for a 120-meter-long scenic pedestrian bridge in the Gaetmok area, marking the official start of construction.

By the project's completion in 2027, Jeoncheon Stream's water conveyance capacity and river stability are expected to be significantly enhanced, greatly contributing to the quality of life through the revitalization of citizens’ leisure activities. In particular, the newly constructed pedestrian bridge in the Gaetmok area is anticipated to become a new landmark for Jeoncheon Stream, offering a unique landscape and experience.

Lee Dalhyeong, Head of the Construction Division, stated, "Through the Jeoncheon Local Stream Maintenance Project, we will continue our efforts to ensure Jeoncheon Stream is safe from disasters and becomes an even more beloved waterfront space for citizens."
