The task force was formed to respond to the government's national agenda of "addressing the climate crisis and achieving a sustainable energy transition," to strengthen collaboration within the Korea Rail Network Authority, and to take the lead in realizing carbon neutrality in the rail sector, implementing the K-RE100 initiative for public institutions, and expanding renewable energy adoption.

With the task force at its core, the authority plans to review strategies for reducing carbon emission sources throughout the entire railway lifecycle and to establish a master plan and action plan for promoting renewable energy in the rail sector.

In addition, the authority aims to drive decarbonization across the railway sector by gradually implementing detailed initiatives such as expanding renewable energy generation at railway facilities, minimizing carbon emissions during the design and construction phases, and utilizing idle land for related projects.

Lee Seonghae, President of the Korea Rail Network Authority, stated, "In line with the government's carbon neutrality policy, we will continue to promote the expansion of renewable energy and the improvement of energy efficiency in the railway industry," adding, "We will realize eco-friendly innovation across the railway sector and become a leading institution in achieving carbon neutrality."
