Jeju Special Self-Governing Province is actively advancing comprehensive preparations for the successful hosting of the 46th National Sports Festival for the Disabled and the 107th National Sports Festival in 2026, including accommodations.
With more than 40,000 people, including athletes, officials, stakeholders, and spectators, expected to visit Jeju during the event, securing accessible accommodations for people with disabilities has been identified as a key challenge, particularly for the smooth operation of the National Sports Festival for the Disabled.
Concerns have also been raised regarding disparities in the supply of accommodations near event venues, insufficient information about lodging options, and potential price increases during the event period.
In response, the province held a meeting on the 26th with accommodation-related departments from both the provincial and municipal governments to proactively address these issues. The meeting focused on assessing the current status of various types of accommodations, such as tourist hotels, residential lodging facilities, and rural homestays, and discussed ways to collaborate for the event.
This meeting followed a previous promotional strategy session with related agencies and was organized to accelerate sector-specific action plans for the festival’s preparations. Starting with accommodations, the province will sequentially discuss countermeasures for medical support, transportation, and facility safety.
By January next year, the province plans to conduct a survey focusing on accommodations that can actually host athlete and official delegations from other cities and provinces, as well as from the National Sports Association for the Disabled. The survey will cover tourist hotels, residential lodging facilities, and rural homestays, and will comprehensively assess factors such as accommodation capacity, room size, peak and off-peak pricing, and the availability of accessibility features like barrier-free rooms, ramps, and elevators for people with disabilities.
The information gathered through this survey will be provided to sports associations in other cities and provinces to offer practical assistance in securing lodging for athletes and officials. It will also be used to plan accommodation assignments, transportation routes, and improvements to the overall stay experience. Additionally, the data will serve as a foundation for stabilizing prices and minimizing inconvenience related to accommodations.
Furthermore, the province will establish a collaborative system with relevant accommodation organizations to promote the "Safe, Comfortable, and Friendly Accommodation" campaign. Supplementary measures, such as providing temporary ramps, will also be implemented to enhance convenience for participants in the National Sports Festival for the Disabled.
Alongside accommodation measures, the province is accelerating overall preparations for the festival, including renovating sports venues, meeting sport-specific public and approval standards, and fostering enthusiasm for the event.
Renovation and design work for the venues is progressing in stages, and promotional and engagement programs are already underway. The province will continue to establish medical support systems, transportation plans, and facility safety management measures to enhance the completeness of the event preparations.
Kang Dongkyun, Director of the National Sports Festival Planning Division, stated, "Following the recent promotional strategy meeting, we will now begin to concretize sector-specific preparations, including medical support, transportation, and facility safety, starting with accommodation measures. By providing the surveyed accommodation information to city and provincial sports associations, we aim to offer practical assistance for athletes and officials, and to create an environment where all participants and visitors can stay with peace of mind."
