Simmons CEO Kim Minsu, Formerly of Louis Vuitton, Unveils First Project: "Luxury Black"

Renovated Simmons Store Opens at Shinsegae Gangnam on November 25
Targeting the Luxury Market with Prominent Beautyrest Black Display

Black leather panels with deep wood frames. On November 25, the newly renovated Simmons store at Shinsegae Department Store’s Gangnam branch in Seoul presented a completely different atmosphere from previous locations. This is because the colors typically associated with a "Simmons store" are closer to white and wood tones. The space was entirely reimagined with an image reminiscent not of a typical bedding store, but of a luxury flagship boutique.

Past the entrance, the top-tier lineup, "Beautyrest Black," immediately caught the eye. The signature models "Kelly" and "Lauren" were generously displayed at the front of the store, naturally harmonizing with the black and wood tones. The reduced number of displayed products, which allowed for a more spacious flow, was also striking. The layout was designed to leave room so that customers could fully focus on each product.

The consultation tables and stools featured the black and white houndstooth check pattern of Simmons’ signature frame, "Arla." This detail, combined with the deep wood tones, served as a focal point for the store. The dark leather walls, gray-toned carpet, and minimal lighting throughout the space elevated the overall sense of luxury.

On one side of the store, a cross-sectional display revealed the structure of the vanadium pocket springs, alongside a spring tester. Rather than a simple exhibition, this setup directly showcased the product’s structure and technology. The restrained tone of the display highlighted the brand’s heritage without disrupting the overall atmosphere.

Simmons explained that this renewal conveys a message beyond a simple interior redesign. The Shinsegae Gangnam branch is a symbolic location, home to global luxury brands such as Herm?s, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel, and has ranked number one in sales for three consecutive years. The large-scale renovation at this site is seen as an effort to strengthen the brand’s ability to meet premium demand, tailored to the characteristics of this high-end market.

The store’s design was reportedly inspired by the "Beautyrest Black" campaign concept. It was reinterpreted as a showroom-style space based on black and wood tones. In particular, Simmons emphasized that the retail experience was tailored to the consumption patterns and expectations of the Gangnam branch’s clientele.

This transformation also marks the first major renovation under the leadership of CEO Kim Minsu, who took office in the second half of this year. Simmons has recently accelerated its premiumization strategy by hiring a series of executives from Louis Vuitton Korea. CEO Kim himself is a former Managing Director of Louis Vuitton Korea. Industry observers believe that Simmons is now targeting the luxury market in earnest, moving beyond the realm of simple premium branding.

Starting with the Shinsegae Gangnam branch, Simmons’ luxury renewal is expected to expand to other major stores in the future. A Simmons representative stated, "We have successfully infused the unique heritage and outstanding technology of the Simmons brand into the Shinsegae Gangnam store," adding, "Through this renewal and expansion, more customers will be able to experience Simmons’ exclusive high-end sleep solutions."
