"The Hands-Free Driving Era Has Arrived" GM's 'Super Cruise' Debuts This Month

Cadillac Escalade IQ Equipped with Super Cruise
Autonomously Controls Direction, Speed, and Even Changes Lanes

"The era where you don't have to hold the steering wheel has arrived."

According to industry sources on November 12, Cadillac's Escalade IQ, the first domestic model equipped with General Motors (GM)'s driver assistance system 'Super Cruise,' will be launched in Korea this month. The Escalade IQ features a large 205kWh battery, the longest domestic driving range of 739km, and a maximum electric performance of 750 horsepower.

Super Cruise provides hands-free driving by precisely recognizing roads and surrounding environments through the combination of LiDAR-based high-definition maps, GPS, vehicle control systems, cameras, and radar sensors.

The vehicle autonomously recognizes roads and automatically controls driving direction and speed. The system calculates the speed and distance of surrounding vehicles in real time, allowing it to automatically change lanes when the driver activates the turn signal, or even initiate a lane change on its own depending on the situation of the vehicle ahead.

While you can take your hands off the wheel, you must keep your eyes on the road. The monitoring system detects in real time whether the driver is paying attention, and if the gaze strays from the road, visual, auditory, and tactile warnings are triggered sequentially. If the driver does not respond despite repeated warnings, the system will automatically terminate driving.

This measure takes into account the possibility that overreliance on the assistance system may lead to inattentive driving. It demonstrates the evolution of driving technology based on accuracy and reliability, going beyond simply granting the "freedom to take your hands off."

The excellence of Super Cruise technology has already been proven in North America. Super Cruise has accumulated approximately 877 million kilometers of driving data in North America and is currently applied to 23 models, with related data continuously collected each month. More than 60% of vehicles equipped with Super Cruise are counted as active users every month, indicating high acceptance and user satisfaction with the technology.

According to automotive media outlet InsideEVs, as of the second quarter of 2024, GM has equipped Super Cruise on more than 500,000 vehicles, with about 200,000 monthly active users. The range of roads supported by the technology, including the United States and Canada, exceeds 1.2 million kilometers, and its coverage is expanding beyond highways to include small and medium-sized cities and arterial roads. Reflecting these achievements, Super Cruise was selected as the top driver assistance technology in the '2025 Best Tech Awards' by MotorTrend.

GM has chosen Korea as the third market for Super Cruise, following North America and China, and has completed localization of the technology through the establishment of a domestic LiDAR-based HD map, operation of OTA update servers, and collaboration between local engineering teams and global engineers. In Korea, it can be used on approximately 23,000 kilometers of highways and major arterial roads.

A GM Korea Operations Center representative stated, "This is not simply a product launch, but demonstrates our strategic commitment to making the Korean market a core market for future mobility technology. Through Super Cruise, cars are evolving from mere means of transportation into new spaces that expand the driver's time, and Korea is an important starting point for this transformation."
