Hospital Director and Employee Arrested for Arson Threat at HIRA Over Insurance Payout Dispute

Hospital Director and Employee Arrested for Arson Threat at HIRA Over Insurance Payout Dispute

The head of a hospital and an employee were arrested by police after causing a disturbance at the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) while demanding an insurance payout and carrying gasoline.

On November 7, Yonhap News reported, "The Songpa Police Station in Seoul has booked a woman in her 60s, identified as Ms. A, who is the hospital director, and a woman in her 40s, identified as Ms. B, who is an employee of the hospital, on charges of attempted arson of an inhabited building, and is currently investigating the case."

According to the report, at around 1 p.m. the previous day, Ms. A and Ms. B threatened staff at the Seoul headquarters of HIRA in Garak-dong, Songpa-gu, by showing them gasoline and a lighter and threatening to set a fire, before being apprehended at the scene.

The investigation found that they committed the act out of dissatisfaction after HIRA refused to accept their insurance claim.

Police are reportedly considering applying for an arrest warrant for Ms. A, who led the crime. Ms. B has been released and will be investigated without detention.
