Yongin City Expands Honorary Allowance for National Meritorious Persons from 65 and Older to All Ages

On November 6, Yongin City announced that starting January 1 next year, it will provide the 100,000 won Honorary Allowance for National Meritorious Persons to all eligible recipients, regardless of age, instead of limiting it to those aged 65 and older.

The city explained that this decision was made to honor national meritorious persons without generational discrimination and to foster their sense of pride, and that the necessary funds will be reflected in next year’s budget.

As of this year, there are a total of 11,650 national meritorious persons in Yongin City, with a veterans’ budget of around 18.2 billion won. By removing the age restriction, approximately 2,050 additional recipients will newly qualify for the allowance, and the city estimates that about 2.46 billion won in additional funding will be required for next year.

The city plans to cooperate with the city council to revise the relevant ordinance in order to establish the legal basis for removing the age restriction.

Lee Sangil, Mayor of Yongin, stated, “Abolishing the age restriction for the Honorary Allowance for National Meritorious Persons has long been a wish of veterans’ families and will serve as an important opportunity to promote harmony across generations. We expect that this will not only enhance the pride of national meritorious persons but also provide practical support in their daily lives.”
