This contest was organized by the Korea Forest Service and held nationwide. The final winners were selected through document reviews, on-site evaluations, and online voting for sites directly constructed by Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. The results were highly regarded not only for technical achievements but also for the effectiveness and efforts in preventing forest disasters and preserving the local ecosystem.
The site selected as an outstanding example is Cheongyang-ri in Kimhwa-eup, Cheorwon County, which suffered damage to the village and the local agro-industrial complex due to debris flow losses caused by heavy rainfall in July and August 2020.
Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province created eco-friendly erosion control facilities that harmonize with the surrounding forest by making maximum use of large rocks left on site and preserving the existing natural stream, thereby minimizing forest damage. The project received high praise for simultaneously achieving two goals: preventing landslide damage and preserving the ecosystem.
Meanwhile, prior to this year's rainy season, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province proactively constructed 115 erosion control dams, 11 kilometers of stream preservation, 13 hectares of mountain erosion control, and two forest watershed management sites, earning positive evaluations for preventing damage caused by heavy rainfall.
The province plans to use this award as an opportunity to further strengthen the technical capabilities of eco-friendly erosion control methods and expand their field application. In particular, it will focus on developing and disseminating innovative techniques that can simultaneously achieve the dual goals of forest disaster prevention and ecosystem preservation.
Yoon Seunggi, Director of the Forest Environment Bureau of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, stated, "This award proves that our erosion control projects are making a tangible contribution to landslide prevention and ecosystem protection. We will continue to promote eco-friendly and functional erosion control projects to create a safe forest environment where nature and people coexist."
