Hands-On Exhibits, Special Lectures, and Family-Friendly Programs at Jang Youngsil Science Center
On October 26, Sun Moon University will hold a hands-on event at the Jang Youngsil Science Center in celebration of "Jang Youngsil Day 2025," where children and teenagers can directly observe, create, and experience science. This festival reinterprets the creative spirit of Jang Youngsil, the great scientist of the Joseon Dynasty, through the lens of modern science.
According to Sun Moon University on October 22, this year's event will be organized around five themes: "Water," "Wind," "Metal," "Light," and "Space." The festival will combine exhibitions and interactive experiences to create a science festival for visitors.
Visitors can complete a workbook as they tour the exhibition halls and receive a commemorative gift upon submission.
On the outdoor plaza, there will be experience booths for families to participate in activities such as "Making a Glowing Mood Lamp" and "Making a Pinwheel."
On the same day, a special lecture will be held, organized by the National Science Museum and co-hosted by the Korea Science Museum Association and the Jang Youngsil Science Center.
Science communicator "Ujutoon (Park Sunkyung)" will engage with the audience through an intriguing astronomy talk titled "Is Astronomy Really This Close?" featuring famous artworks and music.
Research institutes from Sun Moon University will also participate to vividly convey the real-world aspects of science. The Future Automotive Specialization Project Group will showcase the convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and future vehicle technologies through demonstrations of dog robots and scale cars, while the Jang Youngsil Research Institute will offer hands-on experiences such as making models of the Geobukseon (turtle ship) and other Joseon-era inventions.
Additionally, food booths incorporating scientific principles are expected to be popular. These include "Spin It Yourself! Cotton Candy," where visitors pedal a bicycle to make cotton candy, "Solar-Cooked Sausages," which offers a solar cooking experience, and a local food promotion booth operated by the Asan City Food Foundation.
Jin Inseok, Director of the Jang Youngsil Science Center, stated, "This event will be an opportunity for children to experience the joy of science and learn about Jang Youngsil's creative spirit," adding, "We will continue to work towards spreading a culture of science in collaboration with the local community."
Meanwhile, the Jang Youngsil Science Center introduced a new 4D video theater this year and continues to establish itself as a hands-on science center for children with features such as the "Space and Aviation Exhibition Hall," "Lego Photo Zone," and "Motion Recognition Media Exhibits."
