Gyeonggi Province has recommended key courses of the 'Gyeonggi Old Road' that are ideal for outings during the Chuseok holiday.
The Gyeonggi Old Road is a network of trails created through historical research and modern reinterpretation of major transportation routes that once connected Hanyang (present-day Seoul) to the rest of the country during the Joseon Dynasty. Currently, it consists of 7 main routes, 56 sections, and spans a total length of 677 kilometers.
First, Uiju-gil Route 5 Imjin Ferry Route (Paju) is a course that stretches from Dokseo Samgeori in Paju to Imjingak. This trail passes through Hwaseokjeong, which preserves the legacy of Yulgok Yi I, and the Bridge of Freedom, a symbol of division and a prayer for peace. Blending past and present, this route offers a chance to reflect on both the pain of the Korean War and the meaning of inter-Korean reconciliation. With scenic views from Jangsan Observatory and spots to rest, it is a great course for families to walk together, contemplate, and converse. The total length is 13.8 kilometers, and it takes about 4 hours to complete.
Ganghwa-gil Route 3 Unyang Ferry Route (Gimpo) was a vital transportation and logistics route to Ganghwa Island during the Joseon Dynasty. It passes through large ecological parks such as the Gimpo Hangang Bird Ecology Park and Hadongcheon Ecological Park. Visitors can observe a variety of migratory birds, including white-naped cranes and black-faced spoonbills, while the expansive wetlands and fields offer a rare natural landscape near the city. This route is ideal for families to walk together, surrounded by scenery where people and nature coexist. Its proximity to the city, combined with opportunities for both ecological exploration and relaxation, makes it a perfect weekend outing for families. The total length is 15 kilometers, and it takes about 4 hours and 40 minutes to complete.
Pyeonghae-gil Route 4 Dumulmeori Ferry Route (Yangpyeong) centers around Dumulmeori, where the Bukhan River and Namhan River meet. Dumulmeori is renowned for its beautiful scenery throughout all four seasons, its early morning mist, and a 400-year-old zelkova tree. The route also includes historical sites such as the tomb and stele of Han-eum Yi Deokhyeong, making it a perfect course for families to enjoy both nature and history at a leisurely pace. Its picturesque landscape has made it a well-known photo spot, ideal for making special memories. The total length is 15 kilometers, and it takes about 4 hours to complete.
Samnam-gil Route 7 Doksanseong Fortress Route (Osan) passes through the Sema Site of Doksanseong Fortress, associated with General Gwon Yul. Along with open views, visitors can experience Bojeoksa, an ancient Baekje temple, and the Doksanseong Forest Bath. As a mountain trail, it can be a challenging course, but climbing it with family on a cool autumn day provides a rewarding experience that combines history and nature. The total length is 7.6 kilometers, and it takes about 2 hours to complete.
An official from Gyeonggi Province stated, "We hope you will take the opportunity to walk the Gyeonggi Old Road with your family during the Chuseok holiday and have a meaningful time experiencing both history and nature."
