Postal financial services, which had been halted due to the fire at the Daejeon National Information Resources Service (NIRS), have been fully restored and operations have resumed. Postal services are still undergoing system recovery and are being inspected with the goal of resuming service tomorrow morning.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 28th that postal financial services would return to normal starting from 9 p.m. on this day.
With the resumption of closely related services for the public-such as post office debit card payments, internet banking, ATM usage, insurance subscriptions, and insurance claims-which had been suspended due to the fire at part of the NIRS facility, there is now some relief.
The disruption in postal financial services occurred on the afternoon of the 26th due to a fire in the internal facilities of the NIRS. After the fire was extinguished, the government inspected the network equipment at the NIRS facility and worked to restart the administrative information systems, including the post office servers.
The Korea Post under the Ministry of Science and ICT began system inspections for the normal operation of postal services on the night of the 27th, and after completing inspections throughout the day,
they confirmed that there were no issues and decided to resume services quickly to minimize inconvenience for the public.
The Korea Post also plans to assess customer damages following the normalization of the system.
However, postal services require a bit more time for system recovery, so inspections are ongoing with the aim of resuming services tomorrow morning.
Currently, out of the 19 Grade 1·2 administrative information systems overseen by the Ministry of Science and ICT, five-including the main website and business portal-remain suspended. For the main website, visitors are being directed to alternative social networking service (SNS) channels (such as Instagram and Facebook) and provided with instructions for handling civil affairs through a dedicated outage notification page.
For the operation of other administrative work, internal tasks are being carried out using handwritten approvals and commercial email services.
Minister Bae Kyunghoon of the Ministry of Science and ICT stated, "We sincerely apologize to the public for the inconvenience caused by the disruption of services due to the fire at the NIRS facility housing the post office servers," and added, "We will continue to update the systems and conduct ongoing monitoring to ensure that postal and financial services are fully normalized, and we will assess any damages that have occurred."
